Frisbee Lesson Plan 4 - Thursday

EQUIPMENT:

  • 1 Hula hoop per student
  • 1 Frisbee per student
  • 10 Cones
  • Fitness Scavenger Cards

OUTCOMES:

The student will:

  1. Participate in Burpee-Flip-Drill demonstrating agility, and following the instructions described by the instructor.
  2. Participate in a Fitness Scavenger Hunt to improve aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, and flexibility during the Fitness section of class.
  3. Demonstrate throwing and catching a Frisbee for distance and accuracy as demonstrated by the instructor.
  4. Participate in Frisbee 21 demonstrating throwing, catching, and cooperative skills while following the rules presented by the instructor during the closing portion of class.

NATIONAL STANDARDS: 1-5

Burpee Flip Drill

INSTRUCTIONS:

The burpee-flip can be done in small groups or in unison with the entire class. The teacher calls out the number, and students yell the number while performing the movement. The sequence is as follows:

  1. Standing position
  2. Bend the knees, hands on the floor or ground
  3. Legs kick back into an all-fours position, head up
  4. Half flip right to a crab position
  5. Half flip right to an all-fours position

TEACHING HINTS:

This activity can also be done with a left flip or with two flips, one left and one right, and so forth. Let students try this activity with a small group. Challenge them to stay together and to continue enlarging the group. Participants must call the numbers for their group.

Another variation is to put in a push-up before the flip. Step 4 would be the down motion, and step 5 would be the up motion. Use caution to ensure that students are far enough apart in case one student flips the wrong way.

Fitness Scavenger Hunt

INSTRUCTIONS:

Students work together in teams or small groups. The teams stay together and hunt within the exercise area of the gym or field space.

Examples of entries that can be used on the exercise sheet:

  • Run to each corner of the gym and perform 25 curl-ups. All team members work together.
  • Run to the open set of bleachers and perform 25 step-ups on the first row. The count should be “up, up, down, down,” with the steps.
  • Do carioca steps to each of the other groups and tell them they are doing a good job.
  • Jog to the tumbling mats and perform two sitting stretches; hold each for eight counts.
  • Run and find the short jump ropes. Complete 25 jumps at a fast-time pace.
  • Jog and touch five walls, two different red lines, and three different black lines. Stay together with your group.
  • Jog to the “Jumping jacks” sign and perform 25 jumping jacks with at least four different variations in arm or foot patterns.

TEACHING HINTS:

Give the teams a laminated sheet or card that lists the area to find and the activities to perform at the designated area. The sheets can have 8 to 12 activities, depending on how long the fitness segment of the lesson is going to last.

Assign each team a different starting point to ensure that students are spread across all areas and that a backup of students does not occur at one of the fitness areas.

When teams complete their tasks, they continue walking around the area and cooling down.

Challenges to Improve Throwing and Catching

INSTRUCTIONS:

Try some of the following challenges to place an emphasis on accuracy.

  • Throw the Frisbee through a hoop held by a partner.
  • Catch the Frisbee under your leg. Catch it behind your back.
  • Throw the Frisbees into hoops that are placed on the ground as targets. Different-colored hoops can be given different values. Throw through your partner’s legs.
  • Frisbee bowling–One partner has a bowling pin which the other partner attempts to knock down by throwing the Frisbee.
  • Play catch while moving. Lead your partner so he doesn’t have to break stride.
  • See how many successful throws and catches you can make in 30 seconds.
  • Frisbee Baseball Pitching–Attempt to throw the Frisbee into your partner’s “Strike Zone.”

TEACHING HINTS:

Encourage students to work independently. Comparing with others is not a desirable outcome when students are learning new skills.

Accuracy takes a long time and a lot of focused repetition to master the Frisbee. Change activities often before students become frustrated (and in turn, bored).

Partner Frisbee 21

INSTRUCTIONS:

Simple rules dictate this game. Partners throw back and forth to each other. When they make a one hand catch, it is worth 1 point. When they make a simultaneous two hand catch, it is worth 2 points.

TEACHING HINTS:

Change partners often so students can play with a variety of peers.

To win, the score must reach exactly 21. If a two hand catch pushes the point total past 21, two points are subtracted.

INSTRUCTIONS:

What was the most challenging part of the Fitness Scavenger Hunt?

What are points to remember to help make your throwing accurate?

Discuss elements that make throwing, catching, and Frisbee 21 successful.

Review the game rules of Frisbee 21.
