Cone up, Cone down

INSTRUCTIONS:

Divide the class in half and designate one team the “up” team and the other the “down” team. Place cones so half are standing, and half are on their sides. On signal, students move in the space provided and try to place all the cones in their respective team’s position.

TEACHING HINTS:

Let the team run and position the cones for 30 – 60 seconds. Then stop and see which team has the most cones in the desired position. For example, the “up” team will count all the cones that are upright on freeze and vice versa.

Partner Racetrack Fitness

INSTRUCTIONS:

Set up 6 stations in teaching area. Each station has a Task Card listing 6- 8 exercise to perform. Select the locomotor movement to be performed by partner during each exercise.

On the start signal, one partner begins the first exercise or stretch listed at the station, while the other partner jogs/gallops/skips/leaps/slides around the perimeter of the stations.

Upon returning, the partners switch roles and then move down the list of activities on the cards.

TEACHING HINTS:

Use Whistle Mixer to create groups of 6. Use elbow to elbow within the group to make pairs.

Use music to make fitness fun and motivating movement.

Have station task card instructions on each cone arranged in a circle or rectangle around the teaching area.

Introduction to the Compass

INSTRUCTIONS:

Print and use Task Sheet 2 – Compassing Introduction

TEACHING HINTS:

Students will follow the directions on the Task Sheet.

Stream Crossing

INSTRUCTIONS:

Students must move from one side of the area to the other without touching the floor. They are given small carpet squares on which to move across an imaginary stream. Fewer than the necessary number of squares are handed out, however, so students must pass the squares back and forth to get their team across. The first team to move all members across the stream is the winner.

TEACHING HINTS:

Students will have to cooperate with each other to get their entire team across.
