Pickleball Lesson Plan 3 - Wednesday

EQUIPMENT:

  • 1 paddle per student
  • 1 pickleball per student
  • Cones to mark perimeter
  • 1 hoop per student
  • Badminton court w/ 3’ net 1 per 4 students
  • Music for Interval Training

OUTCOMES: 

The student will:

  1. Play Pickleball Tag demonstrating cooperative skills and following the rules established by the instructor.
  2. Demonstrate backhand hitting using correct form demonstrated by the instructor.
  3. Demonstrate lobbing during the Lesson Focus using form demonstrated by the instructor.
  4. Participate in Interval Training Fitness to improve muscular strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular respiratory endurance.
  5. Play Hoops on the Ground demonstrating cooperative skills and agility while following the rules of the game.

NATIONAL STANDARDS: 1-5

Pickleball Tag

INSTRUCTIONS:

Everyone moves around the room while bouncing pickleball on racquet.

If tagged, move to outside of area and bounce ball on racquet 10 times. Then, return to game boundaries.

TEACHING HINTS:

Select 2 – 3 “its”/ taggers.

Taggers wear pinnies.

Taggers try to tag people while also performing the pickleball bouncing on racquet.

Interval Training

Alternate Work Activities with Rest Activities
Brisk walking vs. Slow walking
Jogging vs. Walking
Sprinting vs. Jogging
Rope Jumping vs. Walking
Jumping in place vs. walking

Core strengthening exercises

Curl-ups
Curl-ups with Twist
Reverse curl
Pelvis Tilter
Push-ups
Reverse push-ups/ dips

Lower-Back Stretches

Back Bender
Sitting Toe touch
Feet-together stretch

Lower-Leg Stretches

Lower-leg stretch
Achilles Tendon Stretch

TEACHING HINTS:

Create a tape with 30 seconds for each Work Activity and leave a silent bout of 30 seconds for the Rest Activity.

 



Continue the use of the same timed tape to indicate a change to the next exercise.

Backhand Hitting

Skill technique same badminton/ tennis backhand stroke.

Drop bounce ball and hit to partner 5’ apart.

Repeat, increasing distance between players.

Lobbing

Explain purpose of shot.

Partner tosses ball high to partner 5’ apart. Partner returns ball with lob shot. Alternate roles.

Overhead Smash

Explain purpose of shot.

Partner tosses ball, receive with a lob, smash back to partner.

Change roles.

Partner tosses ball, receives with a lob, smash back to partner and continue rallying practicing all strokes.

TEACHING HINTS:

Use Back-to-Back to create pairs of students.

Continue rallying using backhand only without a bounce.

Rally alternating forehand and backhand hitting.

 

 

 

 

Skill technique same badminton/ tennis overhead smash.

Hoops on the Ground

INSTRUCTIONS:

Students run around the area where hoops are spread. When the teacher calls a number, that number of students must get inside 1 hoop in 5 seconds or less.

TEACHING HINTS:

Spread hoops around floor.

Repeat and vary challenges.
