  • Signs for Circuit Training Exercises
  • Music for Circuit Training
  • Pinnies for each team, if desired

OUTCOMES:

The student will:

  1. Participate in the Mirror Drill in Place demonstrating cooperative skills and following the instructions demonstrated by the instructor.
  2. Participate in Circuit Training Fitness to improve aerobic endurance, strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility.
  3. Demonstrate throwing, catching and cooperative skills during the game of Sideline Team Handball.

NATIONAL STANDARDS: 1 – 5

Mirror Drill in Place

INSTRUCTIONS:

Student faces partner. One person is leader and makes a quick movement with the hands, head, legs, or body. Partner tries to mirror and perform the exact movement. Leader must pause briefly between movements. Leader and partner exchange places after 30 seconds.

TEACHING HINTS:

Create partners using “Toe-to-Toe” technique.

Spread groups out in space.

Identify the first “leader.”

Circuit Training

INSTRUCTIONS:

Students do the best they can at each station within the time limit. This implies that not all youngsters are required to do the same workload. Students differ and their ability to perform fitness workloads varies. Make fitness a personal challenge.

Rope Jumping

Push-Ups

Agility Run

Lower Leg Stretch

Juggling Scarves

Curl-Ups with Twist

Alternate Leg Extension

Tortoise and Hare

Bear Hug

TEACHING HINTS:

Tape alternating segments of silence and music to signal duration of exercise. Music segments (begin at 35 seconds) indicate activity at each station while intervals of silence (10 seconds) announce it is time to stop and move forward to the next station.

Use signals such as start, stop, and move up to ensure rapid movement to the next station.

Ask students to do their personal best they can. Expect workloads to differ.

Conclude circuit training with 2-4 minutes of walking, jogging, rope jumping or other self-paced aerobic activity

Sideline Team Handball

INSTRUCTIONS:

Sideline handball can be played when space is limited, and the class is crowded. Extra team members spread out along each sideline. These sideline players can receive passes from teammates and can help pass the ball down the court. Sideline members can only pass the ball, however, and the three-second rule applies to them. One sideline is devoted to one team, and the other sideline to the other

TEACHING HINTS:

Assure teams are made up of different players than were together yesterday.

Place opposite team members on each sideline

A challenging variation is to have players of both teams on each sideline. This distribution forces the active players to sharpen their passing skills.

What muscles were used during class today?

Review elements of exams that caused difficulty.

What do you need to work on to make the game of Sideline Team Handball better?
