NATIONAL STANDARDS: 1 – 5
INSTRUCTIONS:
Four or five students are designated as “loose cabooses”. They try to hook onto a train. Trains are formed by 3 or 4 students standing in column formation with each student placing their hands on the shoulders of the student in front of them.
The trains, by twisting and turning, try to keep caboose from hooking on to the end of the train. If the caboose hooks on, the front student releases and becomes new caboose.
TEACHING HINTS:
Using Whistle Mixer, create groups of 4-6.
Select several “its” and designate them as the “loose cabooses”.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Use intervals of music and silence to signal duration of exercise. Music segments indicate aerobic activity while intervals of silence announce flexibility and strength development activities. Choose flexibility and strength development exercises from the following list:
Arm Circles; Jump or Hop back & forth, side to side.
Crab Alternate Leg Extensions; Skip; Twist; Slide; Lunge; Jumping Jack Variations; Flying Angel Sit-Ups.
Hop to Center and Back; Push-Ups; Gallop.
Arm Stretch – across body; Trot; Arm Stretch – overhead.
Power Jumper; Shoulder Rolls; Ankle Circle.
Head Circles in frontal plane; Stretch & Touch Toes.
TEACHING HINTS:
Circle or scattered formation with space between students.
Student should be in constant movement except when stopped to do strength and flexibility activities.
Create music with 30 second intervals of music on followed by 30 seconds of silence. Students perform aerobic activity when the music is on and strength and flexibility exercises when the music is off.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Underhand Serve
The underhand serve position starts with the left leg forward and both knees bent slightly. The ball is held in the left hand about waist height. The right arm starts with a long backswing and then comes forward, the right hand striking the ball just below the midline. The striking hand can be open or slightly closed, and the heel of the hand should contact the ball. The body weight is transferred from the rear foot to the front foot as the ball is contacted. The arm swing follow-through should be in a straight line.
• Practice serving against the wall
• Once basic form is developed, practice serving to a partner over net or posted rope
Serve and Catch
Several balls are served at same time from serving area. Once the ball is caught, it can be served to the opposing serving area. The object is to catch the ball and quickly serve so that the opponent cannot catch the ball.
A point is scored when a ball is served under hand, goes over the net, and hits the ground in bounds.
TEACHING HINTS:
Student practices alone.
Use Elbow to elbow technique to create pairs.
Divide class into even numbers of groups.
Create groups using back-to-back technique.
1 scorekeeper is needed for each group.
INSTRUCTIONS:
While sitting on a scooter, advance Cageball with feet only to score goals. Set up goals marked with cones on opposite ends of the playing area. If ball is touched with hands, it is immediately turned over to the opponent at that spot.
TEACHING HINTS:
Give pinnies to teams and assign teams to courts.
Students huddle close together so you can ask review questions.
What were some of the key points to remember about an underhand serve? Answer: Eyes on the ball, dominant foot back, heel of the hand makes contact with the ball, follow through, stand with dominate foot back.
