Watch the Recording!“Effective Teaching Practices that Groom Students for Success”
EQUIPMENT:
OUTCOMES:
The student will:
NATIONAL STANDARDS: 1 – 5
INSTRUCTIONS:
Students use a locomotor movement (run, skip, slide, gallop) to move around. When whistle is blown, students run to a partner and jump in air and give each other a “high five” and then continue moving until whistle is blown again.
TEACHING HINTS:
Scattered formation in area marked off by cones.
Alternate locomotor movements.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Alternate locomotor movements with strength challenges. Repeat the challenges as necessary. Challenge movement suggestions follow:
Flexibility and Trunk Development Challenges
Shoulder Girdle Challenges
In a push-up position, do the following challenges:
Abdominal Development
From a supine position:
From a sitting position: 1. Slowly lay down with hands on tummy; 2. Lift legs and touch toes.
TEACHING HINTS:
Scattered formation.
Use 30 seconds of music to signal locomotor movements. Follow with 30 seconds of silence so signal flexibility, shoulder girdle and abdominal movements.
Individual mats can be used as a “home” to keep students spaced properly.
Repeat the various trunk challenges as necessary.
Use different qualities of movement such as giant skips, tiny and quick gallops, or slow giant steps during locomotor activities to motivate students.
As students become more fit, repeat the entire sequence.
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a round-robin tournament, every team plays every other team once. Final standings are based on win-loss percentages. To determine the amount of time the tournament will take, the following formula can be used:
TI(TI – 1)/2
Where TI = number of teams
For example, if there are five teams in the volleyball unit, 5(5-1)/2 = 10. 10 games must be scheduled.
TEACHING HINTS:
Explain Round-Robin Chart.
Limit the length of games to 5-7 minutes so that there is a chance to complete the tournament in 2 class periods.
For more information on organizing a round-robin tournament, search the web for “creating a round-robin tournament.”
Students are huddled close together.
What were some of the skills that you used today?
Which skill did you use the most?
