Week #1: Orienteering Lesson Plan 3 - Wednesday

EQUIPMENT: 

  • 1 compass per studen
  • Music for Parachute Fitness
  • 8 – 10 Frisbees
  • 1 Task Sheet #3 per person
  • 1 clipboard w/ pencil per person

OUTCOMES: 

The student will:

  1. Demonstrate group cooperation Run and Change Direction
  2. Participate in Parachute Fitness activities to improve fitness using form demonstrated by the instructor.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of bearings and arrive at the proper destination as demonstrated by the instructor.
  4. Play Frisbee Keep Away and show a cooperative spirit.

Run and Change Direction

INSTRUCTIONS:

Students run in any direction, changing directions on signal. After students are warmed up, emphasize running, planting a foot, and changing directions quickly with good body control.

TEACHING HINTS:

Scatter formation

Specify angles and degrees for change of direction (i.e., right, obtuse, 45-degree.)

Parachute Fitness Activities

INSTRUCTIONS:

16 Runs clockwise
16 Runs counterclockwise
16 Jumps to center
16 Jumps back
8 count lift overhead
8 count lower to toes
4 count lift
4 count lower

Repeat all, but increase difficulty by holding chute overhead on CW run

Release on last lift.

After the aerobic movements above have been learned, stop the music, and insert the exercises below.

  1. Toe Touches: Lift chute taut to chin. Bend forward and touch grip to toes. Hold taut to chin.
  2. Curl Ups: Curl-up, bend knees, lie back, extend legs. Repeat 16 times. Hold Parachute sitting position in a circle. Curl up, bent knees. Extended legs under chute and lie on back.
  3. Dorsal Lifts: Prone position with head toward chute with arms straight and the chest taut. Lift arms and chest and hold for 4 counts.
  4. Sitting Leg Lift: Sit with legs under chute; on signal lift a leg off ground for 6 to 10 seconds. Try to keep leg straight. Alternate legs. Try a variation: Side leg lefts. Lie on side. Lift top leg and lower.

Compassing and Bearings

INSTRUCTIONS:

Print and use Task Sheet 3 – Compass and Bearings

DIRECTIONS:

Task Sheet provided that gives directions and degrees to follow.

Frisbee Keep Away

INSTRUCTIONS:

Two players try to keep the Frisbee from being touched by the third person who is lined up between them. Rotate the center after 20 seconds.

DIRECTIONS:

Put students in groups of three with one Frisbee.

Players may not run and move around the area.

If a poor throw is made and not caught, the center person can choose to opt out of the center position.
